Old Trafford continues to attract attention following Man Utd's win against Sunderland, not because of the gameplay but because of disturbing incidents occurring inside the venue.
Previously publicly criticized by Ronaldo for its deteriorating facilities, Old Trafford has once again embarrassed Manchester United supporters. After the win against Sunderland, the "Theatre of Dreams" sparked a social media storm due to a rare incident, clearly highlighting the alarming condition of this legendary stadium.
During Man Utd's 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford last weekend, a rare event caused a social media uproar: an away fan spotted something unexpected in the stands. This spectator shared a photo of the incident with a sarcastic comment: "How dirty is Old Trafford? The woman sitting behind me just caught a rat in the away section... I'm running out of strange things to witness at the stadium."
The image quickly spread, triggering a flood of mocking comments from the online community. Another user wrote: "Unbelievable. Even Mother Nature is mocking United." This incident further tarnishes the reputation of England’s most historic stadium, especially given Ronaldo’s earlier public criticism of Man Utd’s facilities as being "decades behind top European clubs."
CR7’s comment was no coincidence. On May 12, 2024, during Man Utd’s match against Arsenal in the Premier League’s 37th round, the Old Trafford roof leaked, forcing thousands of fans to seek shelter. Along with this recent incident, the image of the "Theatre of Dreams" now sends chills rather than dreams to its audience.
According to The Sun, this is not the first time Old Trafford has faced such problems. In February, another rat was spotted running on the pitch during the Ipswich match and was caught by staff. A public health report from December 2023 found rat droppings in the food concession area, causing the stadium’s hygiene rating to drop from 4 stars to just 2 stars.
The cause is believed to be the stadium’s location between a railway and a canal—ideal breeding grounds for rats. However, fans argue Man Utd cannot fully blame geography, as a world-class stadium should maintain much higher standards.
In response, the Red Devils’ management and minority shareholder Ineos announced plans to build a new 100,000-seat stadium worth £2 billion, dubbed the "Wembley of the North." However, the project is stalled because a company owning key land refuses to sell for less than £400 million—eight times Man Utd’s offer.
When Ronaldo left, he said "Man Utd needs change from the roots, not just in the locker room but also in infrastructure." Given recent events, many fans might have to admit the Portuguese superstar was right.
