Surprise over the name replacing Lewandowski at Barca

Supporters were shocked when Gary Lineker proposed Marcus Rashford as the player capable of stepping in for Robert Lewandowski, taking the role of Barcelona’s main forward under Hansi Flick.

Former football star Gary Lineker believes Marcus Rashford can fill one of Robert Lewandowski’s key roles at Barcelona, after witnessing the English striker’s strong revival under coach Hansi Flick.

After a period of decline and being loaned to Aston Villa in January, Rashford seemed to have lost his form. However, an unexpected loan move to Barcelona in the summer of 2025 helped him regain his peak performance. Under Hansi Flick’s guidance, the 27-year-old star has reestablished himself as a ruthless finisher who once made England proud.

In the recent 1-4 defeat to Sevilla, despite Barca’s loss, Rashford made an impression by scoring his first La Liga goal with a confident one-touch volley. In contrast, Lewandowski disappointed by missing a penalty that could have changed the game's momentum. This mistake sparked debate about whether the Polish striker still deserves to be the team’s primary penalty taker.

Speaking on the podcast The Rest Is Football, Lineker stated bluntly:

“I’m really happy for Rashford; he’s had a fantastic start. Even though Barca lost, it wasn’t his fault — in fact, Rashford was the best player on the pitch.”

Reflecting on Lewandowski’s missed shot, the English legend added:

“I thought, ‘Let Marcus take that penalty, he’s one of the best penalty takers.’ Although I knew Lewandowski would take responsibility, my gut feeling was different, and then he missed. Rashford would definitely want that chance, but as long as Lewandowski is here, it’s hard to change.”

Rashford was Manchester United’s penalty specialist during the 2019–2020 season before handing the role over to Bruno Fernandes. Over his career, he has successfully converted 21 out of 24 penalties, boasting an 88% success rate, demonstrating the English striker’s composure and accuracy.

With Lewandowski now 37 years old and his form becoming inconsistent, many believe Rashford could become Barcelona’s “new weapon” if he maintains his performance and signs a long-term contract. With his speed, finishing ability, and regained confidence, Rashford is steadily proving he deserves the central attacking position at the “Catalan giants.”
