Southeast Asian fans highlight multiple flaws that caused Indonesia to be defeated by Saudi Arabia.
Despite high expectations, the Indonesian national team failed to create an upset in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Although they took an early lead against Saudi Arabia, Indonesia’s defense could not withstand the opponent's attacks. Ultimately, the Southeast Asian side lost 2-3.
This loss greatly diminishes Indonesia's chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. If they cannot defeat Iraq in the final round, it is almost certain that Coach Patrick Kluivert's team will be eliminated. The setback has sparked strong reactions from many Southeast Asian fans.
A Malaysian fan named Nazri Main Amoi commented: "Indonesia’s defenders just chase the ball, midfielders lack creativity, and forwards fail to find good positions."
Another fan discussed why Saudi Arabia had the home advantage over Indonesia: "Today, I’m not surprised why the match was held in Saudi Arabia. They deserve to be hosts. Their facilities are excellent, and they truly earned it. I’m sure it was an exciting game."
A user named Bang Herman Fjbb remarked: "Saudi Arabia surged back strongly after conceding an early accidental goal. They pressed impressively and left no space for Indonesia. Meanwhile, Indonesia seemed relaxed and lacked determination."
Another fan pointed out that the weakness lies in Indonesia’s domestic league players: "Players from Indonesia’s domestic league like Beckham, Klok, Yakob Sayuri, and Kambuaya have become burdens and weaknesses for the team. It’s hard to expect much."
Indonesia will play one more match in the 4th round of World Cup qualifiers against Iraq on October 12. Overall, the Southeast Asian representative’s chances to advance are slim. Indonesia can strive to win against Iraq in the last match to at least secure second place and keep a chance to qualify for the 5th round.
