Malaysia missing naturalized star players, Laos captain confident of victory

Without their naturalized stars because of the FIFA sanction, Malaysia remains the stronger side compared to Laos, yet captain Bounphachan Bounkong confidently states that their aim is to secure a win.

After two matches in Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Laos has 3 points, equal to Vietnam but currently placed third due to goal difference. Malaysia leads the group with a perfect 6 points and is considered the top contender for advancement. During the October 2025 FIFA Days, coach Ha Hyeok Jun’s team will face tough challenges against Malaysia, with the first leg in Vientiane on October 9 and the return leg at Bukit Jalil on October 14.

Before kickoff, the Korean coach expressed strong confidence and determination: “This is a very important match for the Laos national team. We know Malaysia is a strong, experienced, and well-organized team. However, we have prepared thoroughly for every scenario and will bring surprises. Playing at home is a big advantage, and our only goal is to get 3 points,” emphasized Mr. Ha Hyeok-jun.

The Korean coach added that his team is in a transitional phase, blending youth and experience. “I believe in the fighting spirit of my players. We want to show our fans that Laos is no longer an underdog but a team with ambition, ready to compete fairly with any opponent,” he added.

This spirit was also clearly reflected in the statement of captain Bounphachan Bounkong, considered the soul of Laos’ attack. “We understand Malaysia is very strong, even though they are affected by the FIFA ban and have lost many naturalized players. However, that does not make us complacent. Their squad is still quality, but we are ready. The team’s sole objective is to win to keep our hopes of advancing alive,” Bounphachan affirmed.

The match in Vientiane is seen as the “key” that will determine Laos’ chances of progressing. A victory would not only allow coach Ha Hyeok Jun’s team to surpass Vietnam in the standings but also open a historic door for Laos football to move closer to the dream of the 2027 Asian Cup.
