Lionel Messi once praised a player after his performance against Barcelona in 2010.
In an interview with Daily Star, Messi revealed that Walcott was one of the toughest opponents he had ever faced in his career. The Argentine superstar believed that excluding the Arsenal winger from England’s squad at the 2010 World Cup was a mistake, and subsequent events proved this to be true.
Specifically, Messi stated: "I have to say that at that time, not calling up Theo Walcott was a wrong decision. And I think that has been proven right. From my personal experience, I can confirm that Walcott is one of the most threatening players I have ever encountered. Barcelona players are usually hard to intimidate, but I can say that when we faced Arsenal last season, he really made us cautious.
When playing against Arsenal at the Emirates, we completely controlled the game and led 2-0. Honestly, Arsenal had almost no chance then. But when Theo came on, he changed the whole dynamic. Almost single-handedly, Walcott helped Arsenal secure a draw against Barcelona that night."
In the first leg of the 2009/10 Champions League quarter-finals, Barcelona had a strong start by leading 2-0 at Emirates. However, from the moment Walcott entered the pitch in the 66th minute, the game completely shifted.
Just three minutes after coming on, the former English striker made his mark with a sharp shot that beat Victor Valdes. Arsenal’s momentum surged, and they brought the match back to level after Cesc Fabregas successfully converted a penalty.
However, in the return leg at Camp Nou, Messi delivered an outstanding performance by scoring four goals, helping Barca win 4-1 and advance to the semifinals.
As for Walcott, during his peak years at Arsenal, he was regarded as one of the fastest and most explosive players in the Premier League. Under coach Arsene Wenger, the 1989-born star frequently troubled opposing defenses with his speed and decisive finishing. The 2012/13 season was considered Walcott’s best period, scoring 21 goals and providing 16 assists across all competitions.
Although injuries later affected his career, the image of the "running machine" wearing number 14 remains a symbol of speed and relentless fighting spirit among Arsenal fans.
