Matias Soule: The heart of Roma and a beacon of hope for... Italy?

In AS Roma’s incredible journey alongside Napoli at the summit of the current Serie A table, one name is shining brilliantly and has become the center of all offensive plays: Matias Soule.

The creative Argentine midfielder is not just the new "conductor" at the Olimpico stadium but now faces an unexpected turning point that could make him the hope for the Italian national team.

Since the beginning of the season, Soule has been the most influential player in coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s lineup. With 3 goals and 2 assists in 8 matches across all competitions, he is the main inspiration for an attack that was previously underrated. Specifically, he has contributed to 5 out of Roma’s 8 goals, a very high rate of 63%. Statistics show that since February this year, only Christian Pulisic from Milan has been involved in more goals than Soule in Serie A. He is not only a skillful player but is also gradually becoming a genuine leader, ready to shoulder responsibility and boost his teammates’ morale.

Soule’s outstanding performance has made Argentina’s silence hard to understand. “He is becoming a leader at an important club like Roma and deserves a chance,” said his agent Martin Guastadisegno. “We know Argentina has many good players in that position, but Soule not being given even a minute makes us think.”

Soule would be a great addition to the Italian national team

And this "thinking" has opened a surprising door to the possibility of Soule switching to represent Italy. “Soule is Italian-Argentine, and right now, I don’t know what might happen if the situation with Albiceleste doesn’t change. Legally, Matias is fully eligible to be called up by Italy,” said the Roma star’s agent. Soule holds an Italian passport through his grandparents, and under FIFA regulations, he is entirely qualified to change his national team since he has never officially played for Argentina.

This is not the first time Italy has had their eyes on Soule. Former coach Luciano Spalletti once tried to persuade him to participate in EURO 2024, but at that time, Soule declined because he wanted to wait for his Argentine dream. Now, with that dream still far away and the blue jersey door opening again, things might change. For an Italy team craving technically skilled, creative, and impactful players like Soule, this is truly a scenario worth looking forward to.
