Thailand’s national team faces significant personnel challenges ahead of the 3rd and 4th rounds of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Head coach Masatada Ishii has called up two new players: defender Wanchai Jarunongkran (True Bangkok United) and midfielder Channarong Promsrikaew (Chonburi FC).
These two players were summoned to replace Sasalak Haiprakhon and Supachai Chaided, both from Buriram United, who had to withdraw due to injuries. The "War Elephants" offense suffered a severe blow right before facing a disciplined team like Taiwan.
With Supachai injured and forced to leave, Thailand now has only one genuine striker, Teerasak Poeiphimai of Port FC. This poses a significant challenge for the "War Elephants," who must defeat Taiwan in both upcoming matches in the Asian Cup qualifiers to keep their hopes alive.
A surprising loss to Turkmenistan in the second round has greatly reduced Thailand’s chances of progressing. The "War Elephants" cannot afford to drop any points against Taiwan, who currently sit at the bottom with two losses, before considering a comeback against Turkmenistan in the return leg.
Although Thailand is rated much higher than their opponent, Taiwan is the more confident side based on recent history. In June 2023, Taiwan drew 2-2 with Thailand, and at the end of 2022, they even defeated Thailand 1-0. Thus, Thailand has failed to win in their last two encounters.
