Sir Alex Ferguson once made a Manchester United star cry in a private room after delivering a harsh and merciless decision.
Sir Alex Ferguson had a glorious career as Manchester United's head coach from 1986 to 2013. During his tenure at Old Trafford, the Scottish manager secured 13 league titles Premier League, 2 Champions League trophies along with numerous other major and minor cups. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Manchester United has yet to win the Premier League and has struggled to compete against rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal.
Throughout his reign, Sir Alex worked with many club legends such as Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane, and Paul Scholes.
According to revelations in the book Bring on United by journalist Andy Mitten, former defender Patrice Evra revealed that Sir Alex once made Park Ji Sung cry in a private room after excluding him from the squad for the 2008 Champions League final.
Evra recalled: “I learned a lot from Park Ji Sung about humility and respect, which are important values in Korean culture. The night before the final, I visited his room after training. He said, ‘Don’t worry about me, Patrice, focus on the game and win for Man United.’ But I knew he was hurting. Later Ji Sung told me he cried alone in his room. I had never seen him show emotions like that before.”
The former French defender added: “Park Ji Sung had every reason to be disappointed, especially after playing excellently in both semi-final legs against Barcelona. Even Xavi Hernández said: ‘That Korean guy runs endlessly.’ Indeed, he never stopped. Louis Saha was also left out and he cried too. But we had to stay focused on the match.”
As for Park Ji Sung himself, he later admitted that it was one of the saddest moments of his Manchester United career.
He shared: “We had won the Premier League multiple times and appeared in many finals, but in Moscow, I experienced one of my most heartbreaking memories when I found out I wasn’t included in the squad for the Champions League final against Chelsea. Everyone was very kind to me, especially Patrice Evra and Carlos Tevez, who comforted me and hugged me tightly. I could clearly see in their eyes the disappointment and sadness on my behalf. They wanted to share that moment with me, and that truly touched me.”
Manchester United later defeated Chelsea in a thrilling penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar becoming the hero by saving Nicolas Anelka’s decisive penalty, securing the European title for the Red Devils.
