Ulsan HD Football Club has formally decided to relieve Coach Shin Tae Yong of his duties after a series of disappointing results.
Recently, Ulsan HD declared the decision to sack Coach Shin Tae Yong. On the club’s official website, Ulsan HD stated: "We have decided to end our contract with Coach Shin Tae Yong, who was appointed in early August. Both parties have officially concluded their brief period of cooperation."
Starting from Round 33 of the K League 1 Hana Bank against Gwangju FC on the 18th, Youth Training Director Noh Sang-rae will temporarily take over as head coach.
The club further stated: “Under the interim leadership of Coach Noh Sang-rae, who has prior K League coaching experience, we will work closely with the assistants to quickly overcome the relegation crisis. At the same time, the club will promptly search for a new head coach.”
Ulsan had high expectations for Coach Shin Tae Yong after a turbulent period under Kim Pan Gon. The strategist had proven his capabilities by leading Seongnam Ilhwa (now Seongnam FC), the U20 team, and the South Korean national team.
Coach Shin started well by securing a 1-0 victory over Jeju SK in his debut match. However, the team then went through a 7-match winless streak (3 draws, 4 losses), dropping to 10th place, within the danger zone, and officially relegated to the Final B group.
After parting ways with the club, Coach Shin Tae Yong shared: “Although this decision came as a surprise, I must respect the club’s choice. I was appointed under urgent circumstances and gave my best effort, but the pressure was immense.”
He also admitted: “I tried to transform the team amid numerous difficulties, but the challenges were beyond imagination. It is truly regrettable.”
Ulsan, a team that once dominated the K League with three consecutive championships, is experiencing a disappointing season. If they finish the final round in 10th place, they will have to play a relegation playoff against a team from K League 2.
Due to numerous management errors and prolonged instability, the club’s leadership could not escape responsibility. Alongside Coach Shin Tae Yong’s departure, Ulsan has also decided to remove General Director Kim Kwang-kook, considering this a measure to take accountability for the poor results at the season’s end.
