The Vietnam National Team has moved up the FIFA rankings after defeating Nepal in the 2027 Asian Cup qualification round.
Vietnam’s national squad regained their winning momentum in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers when they comfortably defeated Nepal in the third match of Group F.
This result not only allows the "Golden Star Warriors" to keep close to Malaysia but also significantly improves their position in the FIFA rankings. Specifically, according to calculations from Footy Rankingsthe team coached by Kim Sang Sik gained 6.98 points after the win against Nepal, rising two spots to 113th place with a total of 1176.9 points.
However, Vietnam is still not the highest-ranked team in Southeast Asia. That distinction belongs to Thailand, as the "War Elephants" secured a 2-0 victory over Taiwan also in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, which lifted them two spots to 99th in the FIFA rankings.
As for Vietnam, there remains a chance to improve their FIFA ranking if they achieve a favorable result against Nepal again in the fourth Group F match on October 14. Securing all three points would bring the "Golden Dragons" to nine points, increasing pressure on group leaders Malaysia for a spot in Asia’s most prestigious tournament.
Following the recent victory, coach Kim Sang Sik admitted the team still needs to improve their finishing to capitalize on chances, while reaffirming the squad’s goals for the upcoming period.
The Korean strategist shared: "Although we had many shots and should have scored more, three goals is still a success. Better finishing will lead to more goals...
Malaysia also won today, so we are currently second. The whole team will give their best in the remaining three matches. Right now, the focus is on winning rather than worrying too much about the competitors."
Currently, Vietnam sits second in Group F with six points, three points behind group leaders Malaysia, who have won all three of their opening matches.
