Bukayo Saka from Arsenal and Jordan Pickford from Everton jointly reached memorable milestones in England’s 3-0 friendly victory over Wales at Wembley.
Under the leadership of coach Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions demonstrated overwhelming dominance, easily overcoming Wales within the first 20 minutes in London.
The match kicked off with excitement as Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers scored in the 3rd minute, initiating England’s overwhelming performance. Less than 10 minutes later, Ollie Watkins, starting in place of the injured Harry Kane, doubled the hosts’ lead with a precise finish.
By the 20th minute, Bukayo Saka concluded the first-half goal fest with a brilliant strike: cutting inside and delivering a curling left-footed shot that nestled into the top corner, leaving the Welsh goalkeeper with no chance to stop it.
In the second half, England continued to dominate possession and pressure their opponents for nearly the entire 45 minutes. Although no additional goals were scored, Tuchel’s team could be pleased with a convincing display – a perfect preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Saka and goalkeeper Pickford set particularly impressive records in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales
With this stunning goal, Bukayo Saka officially entered English football history as the male Arsenal player with the highest number of goals for the national team. The outstanding product of the Hale End academy now has 13 goals for the Three Lions, surpassing the legend Cliff Bastin, who scored 12 goals for England between 1931 and 1938.
This achievement came just one week after Saka reached 100 Premier League goal contributions (goals or assists) during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over West Ham, which was also his 200th league appearance.
After the match, Saka told BBC Radio 5 Live: "It’s been quite some time since I last scored for England, so this feeling is really sweet. I always try to be unpredictable for defenders – sometimes cutting inside, sometimes running along the wing – so they never know when I’ll shoot."
In goal, Jordan Pickford also made history by keeping a clean sheet for the eighth consecutive match for England. The Everton goalkeeper became the first in English men’s football history to reach this record, with shutouts against Wales, Serbia, Andorra (twice), Latvia, Greece, Republic of Ireland, and Albania. Pickford’s last conceded goal for England was against Greece in October 2024.
Tuchel’s England now focus on their upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifier against Latvia next Tuesday. A victory would secure the Three Lions’ qualification for the tournament in North America, provided Serbia drops points in one of their remaining two matches this month.
