Despite U23 Vietnam’s 0-1 defeat to U23 Qatar, Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường, Công Phượng’s cousin, made a notable impact as a starter, confirming his evident development within the U23 national squad.
Late on October 9 (Vietnam time), U23 Vietnam was defeated 0-1 by U23 Qatar in their first friendly match held in Abu Dhabi (UAE). Despite the loss, the young players’ performance, especially Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường – Công Phượng’s cousin, brought many positive signals to the fans.
With 8 key players currently representing the national team in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, coach Đinh Hồng Vinh gave chances to many new faces. Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường was positioned as a starter upfront alongside Viktor Lê and Nguyễn Quốc Việt. In the 3rd minute, the 2004-born player unleashed a volley that forced the opposing goalkeeper to make a spectacular save. U23 Vietnam created several notable chances but failed to capitalize before conceding a goal in the 75th minute from a header following a corner kick by the opponents. Ultimately, coach Đinh Hồng Vinh’s team lost 0-1.
Though he didn’t score, Quốc Cường was one of the highlights due to his intelligent movement, good ball control, and confident challenges. The player, contracted with Công An TP.HCM, is in excellent form in the 2025/26 V-League season, having scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists in 6 matches, contributing to his team’s top position in the standings.
Born in Nghệ An, Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường is Công Phượng’s cousin. He developed at the Hoàng Anh Gia Lai JMG Academy before moving to Nutifood JMG, where coach Guillaume Graechen praised his technical skills, fighting spirit, and versatility. Quốc Cường can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, or winger depending on tactical needs.
Previously summoned to the U23 Vietnam squad during coach Philippe Troussier’s tenure but without making a strong impression, Quốc Cường is now gradually proving himself through effort and clear improvement. He is expected to become a fresh asset in coach Kim Sang Sik’s plan for SEA Games 33 and the 2026 U23 Asian Championship.
The second friendly match between U23 Vietnam and U23 Qatar will take place at 19:00 local time (22:00 Vietnam time) on October 13. This will again be an important opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate, refine the squad, and prepare the best lineup for upcoming competitions.
