'Ancelotti is great but Zidane is truly exceptional'

Real Madrid legend Vazquez disclosed that Zidane was the manager who made the most significant impact on his career, outshining Ancelotti, Benitez, and Lopetegui. Zizou’s success in the Champions League turned him into a Bernabeu symbol.

Zinedine Zidane departed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, concluding a highly successful journey at Bernabeu. Over many years with the royal club, he not only secured numerous titles but also forged a special bond with the players. Although other talented coaches have led the team, Zidane’s style left a unique mark, enabling players to maximize their potential and trust in the squad.

Lucas Vazquez, who has been with Real Madrid for 16 seasons, openly admitted that the coach who made the most profound impression on his career was Zinedine Zidane. "It’s Zidane, and I have worked with great coaches like Ancelotti, Benitez, Lopetegui… but Zidane stands out as the most special. Of course, I have good relationships with all of them," Vazquez told El Partidazo on COPE. These words clearly reflect Zidane’s influence, not only through tactics but also by inspiring and connecting with players.

During his two spells managing Real (2016 - 2018 and 2019 - 2021), Zidane won a total of 11 major and minor trophies, including three consecutive Champions League titles, La Liga, and European Super Cups, becoming the most successful Real coach in terms of trophy-to-match ratio. Over 263 games, he achieved 174 wins, 53 draws, and only 36 losses, setting a record few managers can match.

From his debut with the first team, Zidane made a strong impression with a 5-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna and a 2-1 win against Barca at Nou Camp, ending the rival’s 39-game unbeaten streak. In his first term, he also helped Real defend the Champions League by defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties. In his second season, Zidane set a record with 16 consecutive La Liga wins and added La Liga, the European Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup to his achievements.

Zidane’s legacy still remains, and now Real Madrid places its trust in Xabi Alonso to continue their story. Under the leadership of the former legendary midfielder, can the Bernabeu side maintain their European stature as they did during Zidane’s era?
