After defeating Luxembourg 4-0, Coach Julian Nagelsmann stated that the German squad has recovered its self-assurance, hunger, and composure following a phase of unstable play.
Speaking on ARD after the match, Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed satisfaction with his players' performance. He emphasized that the team is heading in the right direction after some less convincing games in September. “In terms of ambition, I see a significant improvement. The players competed fiercely, stayed focused, and demonstrated the spirit I expect,” Nagelsmann commented.
Against a weaker opponent, Germany dominated completely and secured a 4-0 win. Joshua Kimmich shone brightly with his first international double – opening the scoring from a penalty at the 21st minute after VAR confirmed a handball, and the second from a precise rebound in the 50th minute. Although positioned as a right-back instead of his usual central midfield role, Kimmich performed effectively, controlling the ball and managing the game's tempo excellently.
Nagelsmann explained his tactical decision: “When in possession, Kimmich plays the same role he holds at Bayern. I don’t want to rigidly fix his position. A leader must be flexible and make decisions based on the situation.” The young coach said he aims to maintain diversity in Germany’s playing style rather than restricting players to a fixed formation.
For his part, captain Kimmich confirmed he is completely comfortable with any role assigned to him: “I don’t mind which position I play. For me, just being on the field and giving my all for the team is what matters. Whether on the right wing or in midfield, I always give my best.”
Nagelsmann also praised the team’s collective spirit: “We showed determination and a strong desire to win from the start. That’s exactly what I want to see from Germany.” He believes this victory is a crucial stepping stone for the team to regain confidence and form after a turbulent period.
With six points from three matches, Germany continues to compete for the top spot in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nevertheless, Nagelsmann remains cautious about the challenges ahead: “We have to maintain this level of performance. Only by playing well against Northern Ireland in Belfast next week can we feel more confident about securing a direct spot in the World Cup.”
The win over Luxembourg not only strengthens Germany’s position in the standings but also marks a clear progression in building a youthful, united, and ambitious team under Julian Nagelsmann’s leadership.
