Following his goal and assist in the 3-0 win against Azerbaijan, Kylian Mbappe exited the match prematurely because of an ankle injury, leaving both France and Real Madrid uneasy.

Kylian Mbappe started the match in the win over Azerbaijan during the 2026 World Cup European qualifiers despite having ankle issues from the Real Madrid match against Villarreal. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old striker shone brightly, opening the scoring in injury time of the first half with a stunning solo run past five defenders before placing the ball low into the net. This goal raised his tally for the French national team to 53, just four goals shy of Olivier Giroud’s record of 57.

In the second half, Mbappe continued to impress by assisting Adrien Rabiot’s header that doubled the lead. However, in the 83rd minute, he went down injured after a challenge and signaled for a substitution. Florian Thauvin was brought on and quickly sealed the 3-0 victory for France.

Initial reports indicate Mbappe re-injured his right ankle — the same injury that caused him to limp off during Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Villarreal last weekend. Real Madrid doctors had assessed the injury as “not serious” and cleared him to join the French squad, but it seems the injury worsened after the match against Azerbaijan.

Several sources in Madrid confirm that Mbappe will return to Spain early for thorough medical examinations, which means he will miss France’s upcoming away match against Iceland next week.

Before the injury, Mbappe was in the best form of his career. He had scored in 10 consecutive matches for both Real Madrid and France, including 6 goals in La Liga and 5 in the Champions League. For Les Bleus, he had netted goals in 5 straight games, matching his personal record set in 2022.

Mbappe’s injury at this moment is a huge blow to both France and Real Madrid, as he is central to both teams’ tactics. Los Blancos plan to conduct a detailed medical check early next week to determine the extent of the damage and his availability for the October 19 match against Getafe. If his condition doesn’t improve, Mbappe may have to miss the crucial early phase of the season.
