Forward Son Heung-min has officially made history in South Korean football by becoming the male player with the most appearances for the national team of all time.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Los Angeles FC (LAFC) star played his 137th match for South Korea as part of the starting lineup in a friendly match against Brazil held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Friday evening (October 10). With this achievement, Son surpassed the shared record previously held with the current national team coach, Hong Myung-bo, and legend Cha Bum-kun (both with 136 matches).
But that’s not all, Son Heung-min is also closing in on another record: the highest goal scorer in South Korea’s men’s national team history, currently held by Cha Bum-kun with 58 goals. The 33-year-old forward has scored 53 goals so far, needing only 5 more to equal this record. Notably, Son scored in the last two consecutive matches for the national team.
Son’s form is also explosive in Major League Soccer (MLS). Since joining LAFC in early August, he has scored 8 goals and provided 3 assists in 9 games, including a streak of 4 consecutive matches with goals totaling 7 strikes, an impressive scoring rate.
Son Heung-min made his national team debut on December 30, 2010, at age 18, in a friendly match against Syria. Since then, he has represented South Korea in 3 World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and 4 Asian Cups (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), becoming an icon of Korean football for over a decade.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) confirmed it will hold a tribute ceremony for Son Heung-min before the match against Paraguay at 8 PM next Tuesday (October 14) at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Notably, legend Cha Bum-kun will be present to congratulate Son as he officially breaks the record he once held.
In the match against Brazil, Son Heung-min played as the highest forward, supported by Lee Jae-sung, who also marked his 100th appearance for the national team, becoming the 16th South Korean player to join FIFA’s “100 Caps Club.”
