After being knocked out of the World Cup, Indonesia’s team faced further disappointment with a fall in the FIFA standings.
Indonesia’s dream of participating in the 2026 World Cup officially ended after coach Patrick Kluivert’s squad lost 0-1 to Iraq in the final match. After two games, the Southeast Asian team earned no points and finished last in Group A.
As a result, Indonesia also received the bad news of losing 6.53 points in the FIFA rankings. According to Football Ranking, after two matches in the fourth qualifying round, the team from the archipelago lost about 13.21 points. They currently hold approximately 1,144.73 points and dropped three places from 119th to 122nd in the rankings.
Although they failed to advance, Indonesia had an impressive journey in the World Cup qualifiers. They were the only Southeast Asian team to reach the fourth qualifying round. In both matches against Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Indonesia played well and even dominated parts of the games. Previously, in the third qualifying round, the team also impressed by drawing with Australia and Saudi Arabia to finish fourth overall. It should be noted that Indonesia’s strength largely comes from naturalized Dutch players.
After the loss to Iraq, Dutch coach Patrick Kluivert expressed his emotions: "We played better throughout the match and dominated Iraq in both halves. I am very disappointed with this result. Not only me, but the entire nation of Indonesia, the players, and coaching staff feel the same way.
We fought hard against Saudi Arabia and then had to face Iraq just three days later, which drained the players physically. Right now, I can’t make any decisions. The only thing I know is that the atmosphere in the locker room is heavy with sadness," he added.
