Zinedine Zidane returned to Real Madrid as a coach after a distinguished playing career, including a period at the Spanish royal club itself.
Before taking charge of the first team, Zidane managed Real Madrid Castilla (the club’s B team) and was appointed head coach of Real Madrid in January 2016. During his two tenures with Los Blancos, he achieved outstanding success with 3 titles Champions League and 2 La Liga championships.
However, Zidane resigned in 2021 after Real Madrid had a trophyless season. Since then, he has not returned to coaching despite being linked with several top clubs, including Manchester United.
In a recent interview, the French legend admitted he plans to return to coaching soon, with the major goal of managing the French national team:
“I will definitely return to coaching. Juventus? I don’t know why it hasn’t happened yet. I always keep Juventus close to my heart because the club gave me so much.
In the future? One of my aims is to coach the French national team... Let’s wait and see.”
Currently, Didier Deschamps is still the head coach of Les Bleus, but he is expected to step down after the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Deschamps is the longest-serving coach in the history of the French national team, starting in 2012. He led Les Bleus to win the 2018 World Cup and reach the 2022 final, where they lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout.
With an impressive record at Real Madrid and a glorious career with the French national team, where Zidane won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, the 53-year-old coach is seen as the ideal candidate to succeed Deschamps when his era ends.
Although former teammates at Juventus and France, the relationship between Deschamps and Zidane has been rumored to be “not very good.” However, Deschamps denied these rumors, affirming mutual respect:
“That’s just a mistaken stereotype. We played alongside each other for many years and always respected each other. The last time we met, we had a very pleasant conversation.
Although not close friends, there is always recognition and respect between us,” Deschamps stated.
