Vietnamese overseas star awaiting citizenship unexpectedly appears in the Vietnam national team

Vietnamese overseas goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang attended the Vietnam national team’s training on the afternoon of October 12 at Thống Nhất Stadium.

On the afternoon of October 12, the Vietnam national team continued training at Thống Nhất Stadium to prepare for their rematch against Nepal on October 14.

During this training session, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team welcomed many spectators who came to watch and cheer. Notably, Vietnamese overseas goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang was among those present. Specifically, the player from Ho Chi Minh City Police Club attended the training with some friends to observe the team’s practice.

The Slovakian-Vietnamese goalkeeper is one of the players currently waiting to obtain Vietnamese citizenship. Recently, the Vietnam Football Federation and coach Kim Sang Sik have directly proposed his naturalization.

Patrik Lê Giang’s father is Vietnamese and his mother is Slovakian. He entered Vietnam on January 25, 2023, and even played in the V-League before Filip Nguyễn. However, while Filip Nguyễn has already completed his citizenship process and played for the Vietnam national team since the 2023 Asian Cup finals, Patrik Lê Giang has yet to obtain citizenship due to certain reasons.

Currently, Patrik is the first-choice goalkeeper for Ho Chi Minh City Police, helping the police-affiliated team soar to the top 3 in the league standings. In previous seasons, he also performed excellently, earning the title of best goalkeeper in the 2023/24 V-League.

If granted Vietnamese citizenship, Patrik Lê Giang is expected to be a leading contender for the starting goalkeeper position alongside Nguyễn Filip, Đặng Văn Lâm, and Đình Triệu.
