English media report that Manchester United is ready to part ways with 31-year-old captain Bruno Fernandes, with circumstances evolving and talks already underway.

During the international window, speculation about Fernandes' departure next year has been up and down. The initial claim was that he would leave United after the 2026 North American World Cup, with the club open to a £60 million sale due to interest from the Saudi Professional League. However, later reports suggested Fernandes was not interested and wished to stay at United to play in the Champions League.
Ultimately, Fernandes himself stated that nothing has been decided yet, and he has not considered matters so far ahead as next year. Currently, all his focus is on Manchester United’s Premier League campaign and Portugal’s World Cup qualifiers.
In response, Premier League transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed that United does not intend to push for Fernandes’ transfer this summer, but talks about a possible sale have taken place, while Fernandes wants to take control of his own destiny.
Bailey explained: "Fernandes has made it clear he will not be forced out by Manchester United, which is why he responded the way he did to the transfer rumors last week. This summer, Fernandes did have contact with the Saudi Professional League, but neither he nor United showed much interest in that move. Since then, the situation has changed. Sources confirm that Manchester United has indeed held talks with the Saudi league regarding Fernandes’ transfer."

Regarding whether a transfer will happen next year, Bailey said: "As we know, Fernandes has not publicly stated his position to stop the rumors from continuing. It is clear that he intends to decide his own future."
Since joining Manchester United over five years ago, Fernandes has been a key player, but he has notable flaws — his playing style is sometimes too risky and inconsistent. At times he seems capable of anything, while at others he makes frequent mistakes and his body language, such as shrugging, often sparks controversy.
This season, Fernandes has scored only 2 goals so far and has not provided any assists. However, it is possible that the 30-year-old Portuguese stalwart could suddenly find form, just like last year before Ten Hag was sacked when Fernandes was also unproductive but later regained form to become the team’s top scorer, assist leader, and player of the year.
Fernandes almost embodies Manchester United’s overall recent performance — flashes of brilliance but ultimately unsatisfactory. According to English media outlet TEAMtalk, if United sells Fernandes, there won’t be a shortage of potential buyers, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich possibly interested.
Dean Jones explained: "At this point, it seems Bruno Fernandes still isn’t very keen on transferring to Saudi Arabia, so let’s see if other opportunities arise. Manchester United knows that if he moves to another club, they won’t get a huge transfer fee. In fact, based on his current form, his price next summer would be around £40 million. Maybe he will remain at United because selling at that price wouldn’t be worthwhile."

Regarding Fernandes’ future, Jones analyzed: "I wouldn’t rule out a big European club making an offer that could change his mind. Not long ago, Real Madrid showed interest but didn’t act on it. Currently, he might not be their top midfield target, but we know that’s a position Real wants to strengthen next summer. If other targets prove too expensive or unattainable for other reasons, Fernandes could be considered. Bayern Munich could also join the race at any time. Right now, Fernandes is fully focused on Manchester United and hopes to lead the team back into European competitions."
