Real Madrid can acquire the 'heir to Messi' at any time

Real Madrid currently possesses a strong edge in the competition to regain “Messi’s heir” Nico Paz, due to a buy-back option that the club can trigger at any moment over the coming two years.

Como’s chairman, Mirwan Suwarso, confirmed that Real Madrid can exercise the buy-back clause for Nico Paz whenever they wish, following the young Argentine midfielder’s impressive performances in Serie A.

In 2024, Real Madrid sold Nico Paz to Como for around 6 million euros, including a clause that permits “Los Blancos” to repurchase the player for just 9 million euros in 2026 or 10 million euros in 2027 — a figure considered a bargain compared to his current value.

Since moving to Italy, Nico Paz has made remarkable progress under coach Cesc Fàbregas. In his first Serie A season, he appeared in 35 matches, scored 6 goals, and provided 9 assists. His outstanding form attracted interest from major clubs, including Tottenham, who were willing to pay up to 70 million euros for the 21-year-old midfielder. However, Paz chose to remain with Como.

In the current season, the Real Madrid academy graduate continues to excel, tallying 3 goals and 3 assists in just 7 games. Thanks to Fàbregas’s guidance, Como is now positioned mid-table in Serie A, an impressive achievement for a newly promoted side.

Speaking to Sportitalia, chairman Mirwan Suwarso admitted that Como would struggle to keep their star if Real Madrid decides to bring him back to the Bernabéu: “We agreed from the start that Real Madrid has the right to buy Nico back at any time. It all depends on him. We are very happy to have Nico here and always try to make him feel at home,” Suwarso stated.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid is reportedly planning to strengthen their squad next summer, especially in midfield. Nico Paz, with his versatility to play as a central midfielder, winger, or even full-back, is seen as a perfect fit for coach Xabi Alonso’s long-term rebuilding project.

At the international level, Nico Paz is also making a strong impression with Argentina. He started in the 1-0 victory over Venezuela and is considered by coach Lionel Scaloni as the potential heir to Lionel Messi’s legacy in midfield for the Albiceleste, particularly in their quest to defend the 2026 World Cup title in North America.
