Barcelona president Joan Laporta affirmed that the bond with Lionel Messi has been mended and unveiled intentions to organize a tribute event for the Argentine icon at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium.
Years after Lionel Messi left Barcelona in tears in 2021, President Joan Laporta has finally spoken about their current relationship and the plan to host a tribute ceremony for the Argentine superstar. This is seen as a crucial step to reconnect the club’s greatest icon with the Catalan team.
In 2021, when Laporta returned as Barcelona’s president, the club was facing a severe financial crisis caused by his predecessor Josep Maria Bartomeu. Although Messi reportedly supported him in that year’s election, Barca could not renew the Argentine star’s contract due to salary caps and financial fair play rules. Messi’s departure strained the relationship between both parties.
In an interview with channel 3Cat, Laporta admitted: "Messi and I used to have a very good relationship. When we couldn’t extend the contract, that bond was broken, but since then we have somewhat repaired it. I just hope Leo receives the recognition he deserves for all he has contributed."
Since leaving Barcelona to join PSG and then Inter Miami, Messi has never returned to Camp Nou. Nevertheless, Laporta insists that they have gradually restored their connection and he wishes to hold a special tribute once Barca’s new home stadium is completed. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said: "The greatest moment would be to inaugurate the new Spotify Camp Nou with a tribute ceremony for Messi. We would be very happy if that happens, but of course, it also depends on Leo and his family."
According to Diario Sport, the Spotify Camp Nou is nearing completion and may reopen by the weekend of November 23, coinciding with Barcelona’s match against Athletic Bilbao. If on schedule, this could be the moment the club officially holds the long-awaited tribute ceremony for Lionel Messi.
Will the day Messi returns to Camp Nou to be honored truly come this November?
