Messi is about to achieve an unprecedented award in MLS

Lionel Messi is very close to winning a title he has never achieved in his career after scoring a brace against Atlanta United.

Recently, Inter Miami secured a dominant 4-0 victory over Atlanta United, and once again, Lionel Messi was the center of attention with a stellar performance. At 38 years old, the Argentine superstar continues to maintain his influence and strength reminiscent of his prime, confirming his status as one of the greatest legends in football history.

Before the match, Messi was given rest by the Argentina national team to recover, while Inter Miami prepared for the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Despite only having a week of training with the national team and limited time with his club teammates, Messi returned and immediately made a difference.

During the game, Messi not only scored twice but also assisted a goal, tying for the top spot in MLS assists alongside Anders Dreyer.

The two goals against Atlanta raised Messi’s total MLS goals this season to 26, strengthening his lead in the Golden Boot race. He currently leads Denis Bouanga by two goals and is considered the frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. If he successfully defends this title, Messi will become the first player in MLS history to win the MVP award two years in a row.

But that’s not all, the Barcelona legend has also set a new milestone by becoming the first player in MLS history to have nine matches scoring two or more goals in a single season, including five consecutive games. This figure reflects the incredible consistency and devastating form Messi is currently showing.

So far, he has scored 26 goals and provided 18 assists in 27 matches. As the playoff stage approaches, Inter Miami will continue to rely on the Argentine superstar.

Before Messi, only a few players came close to this milestone: Zlatan Ibrahimovic with eight multi-goal games for LA Galaxy in 2019, Stern John for Columbus Crew in 1998, and Mamadou Diallo with Tampa Bay in 2000. With what he has achieved, Messi has surpassed them all to once again redefine excellence in MLS.
