According to various reports, the Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has lodged a complaint with FIFA, seeking to overturn the 0-2 defeat against Malaysia because the opposing team fielded unlawfully naturalized players.
Reliable sources indicate that the Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has filed a formal complaint with FIFA after Malaysia was investigated and sanctioned for fielding fraudulent naturalized players. ANFA demands the cancellation of the 0-2 loss to Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers last March and requests a 3-0 forfeit win.
In that match, Malaysia utilized midfielder Hector Hevel, one of seven players FIFA identified as ineligible to represent the national team. Hevel not only participated but also scored the opening goal, playing a crucial role in Malaysia’s 2-0 victory over Nepal. ANFA argues that Hevel’s involvement breached regulations and directly compromised the competition’s fairness.
If FIFA accepts the complaint, Nepal’s national team could gain three points, earning their first points in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. This would significantly improve their ranking and open up the possibility of advancing, a scenario previously thought impossible after three consecutive defeats.
The controversy stems from Malaysia’s naturalization scandal, which erupted after their 4-0 win over Vietnam in June 2025. FIFA’s investigation revealed that Malaysia had illegally naturalized seven players, including Hector Hevel, originally from the Netherlands. Following verification of evidence, FIFA imposed a 12-month ban on the seven illegally naturalized Malaysian players.
Nepal’s lawsuit is seen as the latest development in a series of naturalization scandals shaking Southeast Asian football. The final decision could alter the entire group’s standings and set an important precedent for stricter management of naturalized players in international competitions.
