Barcelona’s Raphinha recently surprised fans by disclosing why he turned down a multi-million euro “super contract” offer from a Middle Eastern club to remain with the Camp Nou team.
The Brazilian star Raphinha recently explained why he declined a €100 million offer from a Saudi Pro League club, despite having considered leaving Barcelona after the 2024/25 season.
According to ESPN, the club believed to be Al Hilal proposed a massive 4-year contract worth up to €170 million, including a generous salary that could change his entire family’s life. The 1996-born star admitted he was genuinely torn by this offer:
“The offer from Saudi Arabia really made me think. It could solve almost every problem in my life, my parents’ and my son’s lives. After many years playing football, I thought it was time to take care of my family.”
Raphinha experienced a difficult period at Barcelona. Joining the Catalan club from Leeds United in 2022, he scored only 20 goals and provided 25 assists in his first two seasons, performances below expectations. This led Barca’s management to consider selling him in the summer of 2024 to ease financial difficulties.
However, the arrival of coach Hansi Flick changed everything. The German strategist personally called Raphinha, expressing his desire to keep him and promising a key role in the squad. “After the 2024 Copa America, I thought about leaving Barca due to pressure and ongoing rumors. But after speaking with coach Flick, I felt I still had a place here. I’m very happy I stayed,” Raphinha shared.
That decision quickly paid off. In the 2024/25 season, Raphinha exploded with 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 games, playing a major role in Barcelona securing a domestic treble. He not only proved his worth but also became one of Flick’s key players.
Amid a wave of European stars moving to the Middle East, Raphinha’s choice to stay is seen as a rare example of love and loyalty in modern football.
