Argentina's U20 squad earned a spot in the U20 World Cup final after a nail-biting win against Colombia.
In a dramatic U20 World Cup 2025 semifinal, Argentina's U20 team defeated Colombia 1-0.
The match at Santiago began cautiously, with both sides playing carefully to avoid mistakes in the first half, resulting in a goalless 45 minutes. In the second half, Argentina’s U20 made key tactical changes by dropping their five-defender formation to boost their attack, a move that quickly paid off for coach Diego Placente.
At the 71st minute, Inter Miami striker Mateo Silvetti scored the only goal of the match, securing Argentina's spot in the final. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Jhon Renteria received a second yellow card in the 78th minute, Colombia fought hard but failed to equalize, ultimately losing 0-1.
With this result, Argentina’s U20 team has become the nation with the most appearances in the U20 World Cup final, reaching it eight times in total — in 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2023, and 2025.
Among these, the Argentine youth team has won the championship six times (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2007), a record unmatched by any other team. Riding their strong form in 2025, Argentina’s U20 side aims to claim their seventh title, further cementing their status as the “kings” of the U20 global stage.
In the final, coach Diego Placente’s squad will face the surprising U20 Morocco team, who have defeated several strong opponentsincluding the favorites France in the semifinals.
Although not rated as highly as their European counterparts, Morocco’s U20 team proved tough opponents by pushing France to a penalty shootout, where they successfully converted all five attempts, winning 5-4 overall.
This marks the first time U20 Morocco has reached the final match of the U20 World Cup. Previously, their best achievement was reaching the round of 16 in the 2023 U20 World Cup.
The 2025 U20 World Cup final will take place at 6:00 AM on October 20 (Vietnam time).
