The ex-striker of Indonesia’s national team mentioned that even if PSSI decides to sack Patrick Kluivert, some problems remain to be solved.
Regardless of who the next coach of the Indonesian national team is, there is still a lot of work ahead. Former Indonesian player Indriyanto Nugroho made this comment in response to the growing calls for Patrick Kluivert’s dismissal. On the afternoon of October 16, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) officially terminated Coach Patrick Kluivert’s contract.
Patrick Kluivert faced heavy criticism after failing to lead Indonesia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. In the two decisive matches of Group B in the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers, Indonesia lost 2-3 to Saudi Arabia and then 0-1 against Iraq.
According to former PSIS Semarang coach and ex-Indonesian national player Indriyanto Nugroho, even if PSSI finally fires Patrick Kluivert, much work remains. Not only will Patrick Kluivert be dismissed, but the entire Dutch assistant coaching staff supporting him will also have their contracts terminated.
"Even if the federation wants to replace Patrick Kluivert with A, B, or C, that is their prerogative. But as I said, we need to improve the quality of the league first. Then what? Our local players will also get opportunities, and those abroad will have more chances as well.
Currently, there are more young players overseas. Miliano Jonathans is only 20 years old, and Mauro Zijlstra is also young. So, give them opportunities. Veteran players must continue to develop. Players at lower levels need encouragement so that our football can keep progressing.
Don’t just focus on the top tier. Improve youth football as well. This way, there will be better coordination at the top level. That is why European players can reach the highest standards—they excel in training too. That’s why I said from the start, youth development is the main foundation for the national team’s progress," concluded Indriyanto Nugroho.
