Coach Patrick Kluivert officially parts ways with the Indonesian national team, expressing gratitude to the players, coaching staff, fans, and the President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) despite failing to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
Patrick Kluivert’s journey with the Indonesian national team has formally come to an end after nearly a year together. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and the Dutch coach mutually agreed to terminate their cooperation on October 16, 2025, ending prematurely the two-year contract he signed earlier this year.
Patrick Kluivert was appointed head coach of the Indonesian national team, replacing Shin Tae Yong, at the beginning of 2025. In his debut match, Indonesia suffered a heavy 1-5 defeat against Australia, but subsequently, the Dutch strategist led the team to two crucial wins over Bahrain and China, advancing Indonesia to the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers.
In the fourth qualifying round, Indonesia faced overwhelming challenges, losing consecutively to Saudi Arabia and Iraq, ending their dream of reaching the global tournament early. Despite the disappointing results, Kluivert expressed pride in what the team has built together and emphasized the relentless effort of the players and coaching staff amid difficult circumstances.
On his personal Instagram page, the former Ajax Amsterdam player wrote: “Although I am very disappointed and regretful for not qualifying for the World Cup, I will always be proud of what we have built together.” He also highlighted: “I want to thank the supporters, players, coaching staff, and Mr. Erick Thohir for this unforgettable period. Sincere thanks to all.” These heartfelt words reflect Kluivert’s deep affection for the team and Indonesian fans.
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) also issued an official statement regarding the termination of cooperation with Kluivert, confirming that this decision was mutually agreed upon through a “mutual termination” mechanism. This agreement ends the two-year contract between PSSI and the coaching staff, closing an emotional chapter in the history of the Indonesian national team. Although Kluivert departs, the marks of fighting spirit and significant improvements under his leadership will remain in the memories of fans.
