Potter's next job? Sweden boasts two Premier League star strikers but sits bottom with 1 point after 4 World Cup qualifiers, prompting a coaching change

The latest update from Italian transfer specialist Romano reveals that the Swedish FA has reached out to ex-Chelsea coach Potter and talked about the potential for him to lead Sweden’s national squad.

It is reported that the Swedish FA has held preliminary talks with Potter, who was recently dismissed by West Ham in the Premier League last month. Potter originally made his name in the Swedish league before managing English clubs; he coached Östersund from the fourth tier of Swedish football up to the top division and led them to win the Swedish Cup in 2017. He later moved to England, managing Swansea, Brighton, Chelsea, and West Ham. Potter is open to the idea of coaching Sweden and has praised the position as very appealing.

Why is Sweden changing their coach? In their latest European World Cup qualifier, Sweden lost 0-1 at home to Kosovo, suffering defeats in both home and away matches. With only 1 point from 4 games, they have already been eliminated from direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Even securing second place in the group to reach the playoffs seems nearly impossible, leading to the dismissal of head coach Thomas.

Sweden is the highest-valued team among the four in Group B of the European World Cup qualifiers, yet they are at the bottom of the standings. This is certainly related to the poor tactical performance of the coaching staff. The Swedish squad is full of star players, including five main players from top-tier Premier League and Champions League-level clubs, namelyLiverpool’s Isak, Arsenal’s Ödegaard, Tottenham’s Kulusevski and Rieble, and Newcastle’s Ilanga, as well asBrighton’s Ayari, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson, Borussia Dortmund’s Svensson, Atalanta’s Hien, and Aston Villa’s Lindelöf—all well-known stars from the five major European leagues. Sweden’s strength does not match their current ranking, so a coaching change is necessary. Sweden still has a chance to qualify for the playoffs through the UEFA Nations League route. If Potter takes over, the World Cup qualifiers can be used for team cohesion, and the key is to perform well in the playoffs. Sweden still has a strong opportunity to reach the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, provided Potter can unlock the team’s true potential.
