Manchester United youngster Ethan Ennis became the first player to leave the club in January after he was sent out on loan at Doncaster Rovers until the end of the season. The 20-year-old will experience senior football for the first time in League Two and United will be hoping he continues to be in good form. Ennis confirmed his loan on social media, saying succinctly: "Let's go!"
Ennis' transfer has already opened in December and his loan will depend on which club can offer the best plan for his development, with Doncaster outlining how the exciting young winger will fit into their squad and can guarantee his playing time.
It is worth mentioning that Manchester United's under-21s faced Doncaster at the Championship in September, where Ennis scored in that game. Since then, its performance has piqued Doncaster's interest. This season, he has excelled in the youth team of Manchester United, scoring 10 goals in 15 appearances. In particular, he scored a hat-trick against Altrincham in the Nations League Cup in November to a 4-0 victory.
Ennis started his career against rivals Liverpool, but he was signed by Manchester United in the summer of 2021. Immediately after his 17th birthday, Ennis signed his first professional contract, and only the most promising Academy player would get a professional contract so quickly. However, disaster struck in August 2022 when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. Ennis endured a long 14-month recovery after a serious injury, but he quickly returned to his best form. This summer, Ennis was offered a new two-year contract, with his previous contract expiring in 2025.
Last month, Ennis celebrated his 20th birthday, and renting out will bring him new challenges. While Ennis has played all of his midfield positions this season, his long-term future is thought to be on the left wing, with him a scoring left winger. However, this position is not easy to get ahead in Manchester United, and Rashford, Garnacho and other academy players all play this position, and the competition is very fierce.
But these Manchester United first-team academy players are having a hard time at the moment, including 19-year-old "new emperor" Kobe Maynor, who was revealed to be asking for £200,000 a week and is considered one of the players by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS as one of the players who could be sold.
Meno is currently under a contract until 2028 and boss Ruben Amorim has said he wants to keep the England international, but has not ruled out a sale. Chelsea have been revealed to be interested in bringing in £60 million, and Manchester United are now willing to sell Academy players as the club strives to avoid breaching the Premier League's PSR profitability and sustainability rules, and the sale of homegrown players represents pure profits, and Rajue no longer believes that any player is not for sale.
Asked about Meno's future, Amorim responded: "My players are always my favourite, I really love my players and I want to keep them, especially the talented ones. However, it's a special time for our club, it's a difficult time and I'm very happy to work with Kobe [Meno], who is improving, and Garnacho. First of all, I don't remember saying explicitly that I wanted new signings, what I said was that sometimes different formations have different requirements and the players here have different philosophies.
The United boss added: 'I don't think I explicitly said I want new players, what I'm saying is that when we look at signings, transfers need to be improved and we need to make sure they can meet the demand and sometimes you have to give it a go. I'm also saying that we have to improve the Academy, bring in young kids and make them feel the club in the right way, and with those rules we can make some deals and have the money to invest in the team. Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that our club has developed ourselves, but we are well aware of where the club is at the moment."
As for the final outcome, Amorim said that he could only wait and see. "We'll see the end. But I'm happy and I really like the players, especially the kids from the Academy."
