Players from Espanyol and Real Oviedo simultaneously remained motionless for 15 seconds after the starting whistle, protesting La Liga’s lack of transparency in the plan to host the Villarreal – Barcelona match in Miami, USA.
However, TV audiences did not see this because La Liga deliberately cut to a wide shot of the stadium during the entire protest, only returning to the on-field action after 21 seconds.
The protest was agreed upon by the players and the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE). They argued that La Liga did not consult or provide complete information about the plan to hold the Villarreal – Barcelona match at the end of December, especially details about the number of games planned abroad and revenue distribution.
