Historic poker by Greenwood pushes Marseille to the top of Ligue 1

Marseille secured the top spot in Ligue 1 following Mason Greenwood's outstanding display during their dominant 6-2 win against Le Havre.

Earlier, PSG was held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Strasbourg in Paris, despite a strong comeback with goals from Goncalo Ramos and Senny Mayulu in the second half. This result opened the door for Marseille, and coach Roberto De Zerbi's team took full advantage.

The match started tough for Marseille when Yassine Keechta unexpectedly put Le Havre ahead midway through the first half. However, the situation quickly reversed just minutes later. Gautier Lloris, Le Havre's central defender, was shown a straight red card for handling the ball inside the penalty area.

Marseille immediately gained a chance, and Mason Greenwood calmly converted the penalty kick, beginning a historic night for him personally. Despite Le Havre's efforts to defend in numbers, everything collapsed from the 67th minute onward. Greenwood scored his second goal, then within less than 10 minutes, the former Manchester United star completed a hat-trick and added a fourth goal in the 76th minute.

With 4 goals, Greenwood became the first Marseille player to score a poker in Ligue 1 since the legendary Jean-Pierre Papin achieved the same feat in a 7-0 win over Lyon back in 1991.

Not stopping there, Robinio Vaz extended the lead to 5-1 in the 88th minute. Le Havre pulled one back in the 91st minute, but Amir Murillo quickly responded to seal a 6-2 victory for the Velodrome hosts.

This win propelled Marseille to the top of the Ligue 1 table with the most impressive scoring record in the league, netting 21 goals in 8 matches. Not only did they surpass PSG and Strasbourg, but they also extended their winning streak to five across all competitions.

For Mason Greenwood personally, this match marks his official return to the European football spotlight. After a long controversial period and leaving Manchester United, the 24-year-old striker is continuing his career at Marseille in the most spectacular way.

Marseille will travel to Portugal to face Sporting CP in the Champions League next week. If they maintain their current form, especially Greenwood's brilliance, the port city club can dream of a magical season, not only in Ligue 1 but also on the European stage.
