Arne Slot takes responsibility following Liverpool’s heavy defeat to Man Utd

Coach Arne Slot accepted personal accountability after Liverpool suffered a bitter loss against Manchester United.

Liverpool continues to spiral deeper into crisis after losing to their fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League’s eighth round.

This marks the fourth consecutive defeat for The Kop during this period, highlighting a noticeable decline compared to last season. Nevertheless, Coach Arne Slot praised his players’ efforts.

In the post-match press conference, the Dutch strategist stated: "What I observed today was that the starting players created quite a few chances in the first half, and the substitutes generated even more dangerous opportunities. However, this was a result of the entire team’s effort throughout the first half.

Florian Wirtz came on and continued to bring a lot of unpredictability. Hugo Ekitike was also introduced and nearly scored. Federico Chiesa performed very well, and Jeremie Frimpong would have provided an assist if Cody Gakpo hadn’t missed the chance, as normally he would have scored in that situation."

Additionally, the 1978-born coach took responsibility for The Kop’s defeat and emphasized that criticism should be directed at himself and the coaching staff rather than the players.

He added: "I believe the focus should not be on individuals but on the collective, the team, myself, or whoever you want to mention. We are all giving our best, and that is what everyone expects from this team. The players are doing exactly that."

Despite the home advantage, Liverpool suffered an early setback in the 2nd minute when Bryan Mbeumo scored following a moment of defensive lapse.

After conceding early, Liverpool immediately pushed forward to dominate the game and seek an equalizer. The home side’s relentless efforts were finally rewarded in the 78th minute when Cody Gakpo’s precise shot ignited the Anfield crowd. However, that joy was short-lived. In the 84th minute, Harry Maguire appeared at the right moment to head the ball past Mamardashvili, sealing the match with a 2-1 victory for Man Utd.

This result leaves the Merseyside club trailing in the title race, dropping to third place with 15 points, four points behind Arsenal and one behind Man City. Meanwhile, Man Utd secured back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time, climbing to ninth place with 13 points.
