Maguire: 'MU is not yet in a position to be complacent'

Defender Harry Maguire expressed his thoughts following Manchester United’s thrilling 2-1 triumph against Liverpool at Anfield, the club’s first success there since 2016.

The key match of the round witnessed Man Utd started the game full of enthusiasm. In the 2nd minute, Amad delivered a clever through ball to Bryan Mbeumo, who broke free and finished past Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the visitors the lead. After the break, Gakpo finally scored in the 78th minute with a close-range finish, leveling the score. However, in the final moments, Harry Maguire became the hero by rising high to head home the decisive goal from Bruno Fernandes’ cross, securing a 2-1 win for Man Utd at the fiery Anfield.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Maguire emotionally said: “This victory means so much. For many years, they have been the better team, and the fans truly deserve days like today. It’s just 3 points on the table, but for us, the club, and the supporters, it holds much greater value.”

The English defender emphasized that he had waited 7 years to experience the joy of leaving Anfield with a win. He added: “Every time we come here without winning is really frustrating. Today, I hope our fans will have a night to remember. Liverpool is a top club, they have dominated us for years, so beating them here is truly special.”

Despite the excitement, Maguire remained calm and professional, stressing that Manchester United cannot be “overconfident” after this win: “We must not get carried away. This club isn’t yet in a position to be satisfied. Today’s victory should serve as motivation to aim higher and restore Man Utd’s rightful status.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Brighton, he added: “This win will definitely be talked about all week, but we have to keep our feet on the ground. Every game is equally important, and now our task is to prepare well for Brighton.”

This victory not only marked Ruben Amorim’s first time achieving two straight wins in the Premier League but also brought a fresh boost of morale to the team after an inconsistent start. With Maguire’s strong form and defensive solidity, Man Utd is gradually regaining their composure in big matches, something fans have long awaited.
