Bruno Fernandes strongly defended Coach Ruben Amorim's tactics after Manchester United secured a “crucial” 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield in last weekend’s Premier League round.
Since taking charge at Old Trafford in November 2024, Ruben Amorim's journey has been nothing short of a nightmare. Under his leadership, Man Utd lacked consistency, finishing 15th in the Premier League last season. In summer 2025, the Portuguese manager invested heavily to rebuild the attack, bringing in high-profile players like Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha.
However, the start of the 2025/26 season was deeply disappointing for the Red Devils, winning only two of their first six matches. Experts and fans began doubting Amorim’s true ability and the 3-4-2-1 system he stubbornly implemented. Yet, the poor run ended temporarily when Man Utd beat Sunderland 2-0, then surprisingly defeated Liverpool at Anfield, marking the first time under Amorim’s tenure they achieved back-to-back Premier League wins.
Right after the match, captain Bruno Fernandes firmly defended Coach Amorim amid criticism labeling his tactics as rigid and inflexible. Speaking to Sky Sports, Bruno Fernandes said:
“Our tactics always make it tough for opponents. It’s unfair to judge the system only when we lose, and I’m grateful to discuss it after a win. We always trust the system, whether we win or lose; what matters is doing the right thing at the right time. Today, we had moments of hardship but the whole team overcame them. The most important thing is to keep believing in what we prepare because that is what brings victory.”
Nevertheless, the Portuguese captain also reminded his teammates not to become complacent after the win. Bruno added: “If we don’t win next week, today’s success will mean nothing. At Man Utd, the demands are always high. We have to win every single game. Everyone talks a lot about back-to-back wins, but the key is to focus on the next match. Today’s victory helps us close the gap with the top group and move closer to the position the team aims for.”
In contrast to Man Utd’s joy, Liverpool is going through their worst period under Coach Arne Slot. Despite being the biggest spenders in the Premier League this summer, breaking the English transfer record twice to sign Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen and Alexander Isak from Newcastle, the Merseyside club has unexpectedly declined.
After winning their first seven matches of the season, including five in the Premier League, The Reds collapsed with four straight losses: to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and now Manchester United. This run dropped Liverpool to fourth place, four points behind leaders Arsenal, a gap that worries fans about their title defense chances.
