Ruben Amorim: 'Defeating Liverpool is my greatest victory at MU'

Coach Ruben Amorim mentioned that the “special” victory at the home of the current champions Liverpool should be given to the supporters and demonstrates the excellent fighting spirit of the entire squad.

Manchester United silenced Anfield when Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 2nd minute, and although Cody Gakpo equalized late for Liverpool, the visitors still secured all 3 points thanks to Harry Maguire’s decisive goal in the 84th minute.

This is considered the biggest victory in Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United. However, the Portuguese coach chose to praise the unity of the players and the passionate support of the away fans in his post-match interview:

The Portuguese coach emphasized that luck also plays a crucial role: “Sometimes luck is a vital factor in football. There are matches where we play well but concede goals, and today we scored in the 2nd minute. Gakpo hit the post twice. Just a few moments like that can change the course of a game. That’s something players need to understand, and today they did very well.”

Speaking about the hero Harry Maguire, Ruben Amorim said: “Harry Maguire is extremely important to us. He is a role model for all young players, especially considering what he has overcome. Today, he proved his resilience again. Now we must help Maguire recover quickly to be ready for the Brighton match.”

Continuing about the game, Amorim admitted: “We know our strength in set pieces, so the most experienced players started the match. When you hold firm in the early minutes away from home, you can disrupt the opponent’s defense, and that happened. We fought for every ball, and although we lost composure in the second half, the spirit remained, and that’s the most important thing. With spirit, you can win any match.

We usually control possession, but today we had to play without the ball for long periods, which is unusual for us. So, by the end, the players were a bit tired, which is normal. Let’s enjoy this win, then quickly focus on the Brighton game.”
