Ruben Amorim once wept during his goodbye to the Sporting Lisbon players before moving on to manage Manchester United.
The emotional moment of Ruben Amorim's farewell to the Sporting Lisbon squad was revealed, showing the Portuguese coach crying as he said goodbye to the club where he had shared many successes. Shortly after, Amorim officially took charge at Manchester United, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed following a disappointing run of results.
Amorim’s farewell speech, featured in the club’s new documentary about the 2024/25 season, moved many. Standing in the circle of players, he choked up and said: “I don’t like saying goodbye. We will be champions, there’s no turning back. The difference is huge, really huge. What you showed in the second half today was amazing!”
The 40-year-old coach then emphasized that unity is the most important factor: “It will be tough for everyone, so you must support each other—help Quaresma, help Pote, Geny, Ivan, Esgaio… those who play less. We will overcome this and win together. You were incredible, even better than the match against Man City. The third and fourth goals—that was the most beautiful football moment I have ever witnessed.”
Amid the continuous applause from his players, Coach Amorim wiped away tears and continued: “Whatever you need from me, you will have it. I will cheer for you more than for myself. Thank you for everything, you are the greatest. No more goodbyes, boys.”
Before moving to lead the “Red Devils,” Amorim completed the final three matches with Sporting. It was an emotional period as the team under his guidance secured three impressive victories: a 5-1 thrashing of Estela in the Primeira Liga, a 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League, and a dramatic 4-2 comeback against Braga despite trailing 1-2 with less than 10 minutes left.
These results marked the end of a brilliant era for Amorim at Sporting, where he won two national championships and established himself as one of Europe’s most talented young coaches.
Amorim’s genuine affection for Sporting shows the deep bond he built with the team he led to success. However, at Manchester United, the young coach has yet to create a similar connection. Despite hopes to revive the “Red Devils” after a disappointing season, Amorim is still struggling to find the winning formula.
