Despite a previous altercation with Liverpool supporters in the Champions League, Atletico Madrid's coach Diego Simeone will not receive extra security from Arsenal when he returns to Emirates Stadium.
According to The Sun, Arsenal has confirmed that no additional security personnel will be assigned to Diego Simeone during the match against Atletico Madrid at Emirates. The Argentine coach drew attention after clashing with Liverpool fans during Atletico's 2-3 defeat at Anfield in September, which led to a one-match UEFA ban for "unsporting behavior."
After serving his suspension during Atletico Madrid's 5-1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Simeone will be back on the sidelines for the upcoming match against Arsenal. However, the home club's organizers believe there is no need to tighten security around the visiting team's technical area, trusting that Arsenal fans will not exert the same negative pressure as seen at Anfield.
The design of Emirates Stadium's stands is also believed to reduce the risk of confrontations, as the technical area is located further from the spectators compared to Liverpool's stadium. Nevertheless, there will still be supervisors on standby ready to intervene if any incidents occur. Arsenal's decision has attracted attention given Diego Simeone's reputation as one of the most passionate and controversial managers in the Champions League.
Previously, UEFA determined that Simeone acted inappropriately after reacting strongly to Virgil van Dijk’s 92nd-minute winning goal, provoked by a small group of Liverpool fans. He then argued with the fourth official and had to leave the technical area.
After the match, Simeone admitted: "First of all, I regret how I reacted. We have no right to respond, and losing my temper like that was wrong. It’s not easy being insulted throughout the game. After the third goal, I turned away, but the insults continued, and I am only human."
Will Diego Simeone’s return to Emirates heat up the Champions League atmosphere or will everything proceed orderly?
