Three Manchester United players gained Sir Alex Ferguson’s “approval” following the club’s first win against Liverpool in nearly a decade.
Manchester United achieved back-to-back wins for the first time under manager Ruben Amorim, almost a year after he took charge at Old Trafford.
They started perfectly with Bryan Mbeumo scoring just over a minute after the kickoff in front of The Kop stand. Although Liverpool dominated possession, Man United frequently threatened on counterattacks and could have doubled their lead if Bruno Fernandes had capitalized better on his chances.
The home side finally earned an equalizer in the 78th minute through Cody Gakpo, but just six minutes later, Harry Maguire’s precise header restored Man United’s lead. Gakpo missed a golden opportunity to level again, and the Red Devils held firm to force Liverpool to suffer their fourth consecutive defeat narrowing the gap to just two points behind their Merseyside rivals.
Several Man United players stood out, especially the newcomers. In his second appearance, goalkeeper Senne Lammens showed confidence, making a brilliant save against Alexander Isak and commanding the 18-yard box. Mbeumo scored for United, while Matheus Cunha constantly troubled Liverpool’s defense. Despite only playing the final 30 minutes, Benjamin Sesko impressed with his technical skills.
Journalist Sam Pilger quoted Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous words to praise this trio: “Sir Alex Ferguson once said he always judged a player by their performance at Anfield. Today, we clearly saw that Lammens, Mbeumo, and Cunha all possess the qualities to succeed at Manchester United.”
Although the win was significant, coach Amorim understands he must turn this match into a genuine turning point at Old Trafford. Previously, United had an impressive 2-1 win over Chelsea but then suffered a 1-3 loss to Brentford just a week later.
After the victory at Anfield, Amorim described it as “a very special win” but also emphasized caution: “I believe this is the biggest win since I arrived at Manchester United. Today means a lot, but tomorrow it won’t mean as much. It’s just three points, but a valuable victory.”
Manchester United will return to action at 17:30 on October 25 (UK time), hosting Brighton & Hove Albion at home. This is considered a tough challenge, as the Seagulls have won 4 of their last 5 encounters. Amorim hopes this marks the start of a winning streak before the team faces away games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the November international break.
