The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has formally ended its relationship with Head Coach Masatada Ishii after almost one year, citing differences in vision and coaching principles with the national squad.
The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has just announced the departure of Head Coach Masatada Ishii, who has led the national team since December 2023. The decision was made after both parties failed to reach a consensus on the direction and coaching philosophy recently.
According to the official statement, a meeting between Coach Ishii and FAT’s leadership took place on October 21, 2025, at the Association’s headquarters, attended by Vice President Dr. Charnwit Pholchivin, Executive Committee member Piyapong Piew-on, and Secretary General Akkapol Polnavee. After reviewing and evaluating the work process and professional results, FAT agreed to terminate the contract with the Japanese coach.
The reason is believed to stem from “a working direction and coaching style that no longer align with the team’s development criteria.” Additionally, although Ishii helped maintain some stability for the Thailand team, the results did not fully meet expectations. Since taking office, he led the "War Elephants" in 30 matches, securing 16 wins, with a win rate of 53%, a figure considered insufficient given the team’s need to make breakthroughs in major competitions.
In the statement, FAT expressed gratitude to Coach Ishii for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout his tenure. The Association also wished him and his coaching staff great success in their future endeavors.
Currently, FAT’s technical department is urgently conducting the selection process for a new head coach to ensure continuity in preparations ahead of crucial matches in November 2025. According to the schedule, the Thailand national team will host Singapore in a friendly match on November 13, before visiting Sri Lanka for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on November 18.
The departure of Masatada Ishii is viewed as a major turning point for Thai football, as FAT aims to rebuild the national team towards a new phase of development with a more modern playing style and clearer identity.
