Arteta praised the “raw gem” Lewis-Skelly after Arsenal’s 4-0 win against Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal continued their impressive form in the Champions League by demolishing Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Emirates. Although Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli were the scorers, coach Mikel Arteta gave special recognition to young talent Myles Lewis-Skelly, whom he described as “truly outstanding” in the match.
In the post-match press conference, Arteta expressed his pride openly: “Looking back at what he has achieved since last December, at his age and at this level, it’s truly remarkable. He is very focused, humble, and always ready when given a chance. Today, he was genuinely excellent.”
Alongside Lewis-Skelly, Viktor Gyokeres also made an impact by ending his seven-game goal drought with two goals. The Swedish striker was perfectly positioned inside the box to score the opener and later completed his brace with a close-range finish.
Arteta believes this performance will boost his player’s confidence: “He makes us more unpredictable and stronger. Gyokeres has great stamina, impressive pressing ability, and excellent ball control. These two goals today will motivate him to keep up his form.”
Against an experienced opponent like Atletico Madrid, Arsenal maintained dominance, especially in the second half. Gabriel Magalhaes opened the scoring with a precise header early in the half, before Martinelli doubled the lead assisted by Lewis-Skelly’s brilliant pass. Viktor Gyokeres then scored twice, sealing a resounding victory for the North London side.
Starting in place of Riccardo Calafiori as chosen by Arteta, Lewis-Skelly had a somewhat difficult beginning. He lacked sharpness in his play and narrowly avoided a booking after fouling Giuliano Simeone in the first half. However, in the second half, the young midfielder completely transformed his game.
In the 58th minute, Lewis-Skelly made a powerful run from midfield, skillfully bypassing Atletico’s midfield press before delivering a perfect pass for Martinelli to score and make it 2-0. From then on, he controlled the midfield, not only defending solidly but also initiating dangerous counterattacks.
The 4-0 victory over Atletico not only strengthens Arsenal’s position in the Champions League but also highlights their impressive squad depth. Among the high-profile stars, a young talent like Myles Lewis-Skelly is quietly proving he deserves to be the future of the “Gunners.”
