Crystal Palace’s home debut in the Conference League turned into a nightmare. Hosting AEK Larnaca at Selhurst Park, the English side started enthusiastically with several great chances from Jean-Philippe Mateta, but their lack of finishing and the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerović cost them dearly.
In the 51st minute, Riad Bajić delivered a decisive low shot inside the box, securing the only goal for the Cypriot side. Despite Palace’s attacking efforts, Mateta’s close-range header was spectacularly saved by Alomerović. Ultimately, AEK Larnaca won 1-0, causing an upset in London and handing Crystal Palace a bitter defeat.
Meanwhile, in Vienna, SK Rapid witnessed a historic moment from Edin Dzeko. At 39 years and 220 days old, the Bosnian striker scored in Fiorentina’s 3-0 victory, becoming the oldest player to score in the UEFA Conference League. Earlier, Cher Ndour opened the scoring for the purple-clad team in the 9th minute with a successful rebound finish.
Early in the second half, Dzeko doubled the lead assisted by Niccolò Fortini, raising his total European competition goals to 67. Near the end, Albert Gudmundsson completed the emphatic win for the Serie A side, helping Fiorentina secure full 6 points after two matches and top their group.
Not only Palace and Fiorentina, but this round also featured many impressive results across Europe. In Athens, AEK Athens triumphed over Aberdeen 6-0, matching the club’s record for the largest win in European competition history. Aboubakary Koita scored twice within the first 20 minutes, opening the door for the Greek side’s commanding victory.
In Gibraltar, Lincoln Red Imps created their own fairy tale by defeating Lech Poznań 2-1. Christian Rutjens’ goal in the 88th minute earned the tiny club their first three points in the group stage — a historic milestone for the Gibraltar champions.
Also in this round, Celje (Slovenia) continued their strong run thanks to Franko Kovacević’s brilliant form. He scored twice in the 2-0 win over Shamrock Rovers, increasing his personal tally to 22 goals across all competitions this season and leading the Conference League top scorer chart.
