A tiny football team makes history in the European Cup

Lincoln Red Imps, a small club from Gibraltar, made history in the European Cup by beating Lech Poznań, marking the first time a Gibraltar team has won a UEFA group stage game.

European football history has just witnessed one of the most miraculous victories in the Conference League qualifying round. In the early hours of October 24, Lincoln Red Imps, a tiny team from Gibraltar, stunned all of Europe by defeating Lech Poznań, a powerful Polish side, right at the Europa Sports Park home ground.

This victory not only earned three valuable points but also marked the first time ever that a Gibraltar club has won a group stage or qualifying round match in any UEFA club competition. With an area of just 6.7 km² and a population of over 40,000, Gibraltar is the smallest member among the 55 nations and territories in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Therefore, Lincoln Red Imps’ achievement is even more remarkable and a source of pride.

Before the match, no one believed this tiny club could pull off a miracle. Lech Poznań was in excellent form with a six-match unbeaten streak and had crushed Rapid Wien 4-1 in the opening round of the Conference League. The Polish team also boasts a squad value of over 42 million euros, which is 21 times higher than Lincoln Red Imps, whose squad is valued at approximately 2 million euros. This seemingly insurmountable gap set the perfect stage for a shocking upset.

At the Europa Sports Park, which holds only 5,000 spectators, the Lincoln Red Imps players fought with all the pride of a small but ambitious territory. They played with discipline, courage, and seized every opportunity to defeat their much stronger opponent.
