Indonesia makes a decision regarding Coach Shin Tae Yong

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has for the first time addressed the strategy to appoint a new coach for the Indonesian national team, unveiling plans for extensive restructuring ahead.

In his latest statement, Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), officially spoke about the plan to appoint a new head coach for the national team. He mentioned that PSSI has not yet announced the successor’s identity as two crucial steps are still being finalized. This is considered a significant transition phase, marking a sustainable development approach rather than focusing only on short-term results.

According to Erick Thohir, the first task PSSI is undertaking is expanding contacts with various domestic and international parties. The goal is to maintain transparency and professionalism while demonstrating that the search for a new coach is conducted seriously and systematically. Simultaneously, PSSI will leverage its existing international network to find a strategist who fits Indonesia’s long-term football development program.

The chairman also emphasized that beyond selecting a coach, PSSI is focusing on thoroughly addressing internal problems, including bullying and personal criticism aimed at players and the coaching staff. “What PSSI needs is to restore healthy perceptions about national football,” Erick Thohir affirmed, stating this is essential to rebuild Indonesia’s football image and attract world-class coaches.

Notably, when asked about the possibility of reuniting with Coach Shin Tae Yong, who previously led both the Indonesian and South Korean teams, Erick Thohir candidly rejected the idea. He said the organization must move forward into a new phase rather than relying on former figures. “We have to move on. If we have closed the chapter with Patrick Kluivert, then we must also leave Shin Tae-yong behind,” he clearly stated.
