Young prospect Lamine Yamal upset Real Madrid by joking that the opposition “specializes in stealing” and “whines all the time,” as worries mount over his conduct and demeanor.
Lamine Yamal has become a global sensation since his Barcelona debut in April 2023, even finishing second in this year’s Ballon d’Or race. His youth and explosive style make him a formidable attacking weapon on the pitch, but off the field, he is increasingly causing trouble.
The teenage star enjoys the spotlight but seems yet to learn that not all media attention is positive. He sparked outrage across Spain by throwing an extravagant 18th birthday party, which controversially included hiring people with dwarfism to perform, drawing heavy criticism.
Yamal’s attitude and behavior are under intense scrutiny, as his boundless confidence is increasingly viewed as arrogance. Following recent missteps, sporting director Deco and agent Jorge Mendes have decided to intervene more directly in Yamal’s daily life.
According to Catalunya Radio, Mendes recently flew to Barcelona for a three-hour lunch with Deco, where they agreed on the need to “protect Yamal as well as the club from himself.” As Yamal is becoming one of football’s leading figures, they want to help him avoid scandals that could damage his image and Barcelona’s brand.
However, this plan appears to have had little effect. Ahead of the El Clásico on Sunday, Yamal sparked controversy again when he appeared on a show linked to the Kings League, founded by Gerard Piqué, and made comments that upset Real Madrid.
When asked about a team participating in the Kings League, Yamal joked that “they steal and complain all the time,” referring to Real Madrid. This seemingly casual remark immediately triggered outrage among Los Blancos fans.
Commentator Edu Aguirre, considered an insider at Real Madrid, sharply criticized him on the program El Chiringuito:
“Does he think he’s the king of football? He’s nowhere near Cristiano Ronaldo’s level. No player has the right to call a club thieves. I don’t care if he’s joking with friends in the Kings League or anywhere else. He acts like he’s above everything, beyond right and wrong.”
Another influential figure in Spain, quoted by Foot Mercato also condemned him: “This video of Lamine Yamal should be shown at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training center. Tomorrow morning, the players need to watch it first to see a kid insulting their club. It’s time to teach him a lesson.”
The highly anticipated El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona will take place at 22:15 on October 26 (Vietnam time).
