Ex-player Paul Parker has called on manager Ruben Amorim to boldly remove defender Diogo Dalot from Manchester United’s main squad when facing Brighton in the Premier League.
According to Parker, the Portuguese player’s underwhelming form has become a "burden" for the club. Dalot started in Manchester United’s convincing victory over the reigning Premier League champions Liverpool last week. That match marked the first time the Red Devils secured back-to-back wins under Amorim’s management.
The Portuguese player is considered a regular starter this season, valued for his versatility and ability to perform well on both flanks in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation. However, Dalot performs best on the right wing, while his displays on the left have mostly been just adequate. Even when playing in his preferred right-back position, there have been many occasions where he failed to make a significant impact. Overall, Dalot’s performance has never been consistent, and he has yet to reach the star level that Manchester United expected.
Therefore, former player Parker hopes Amorim will make changes. He emphasizes that Brighton represents a completely different challenge compared to Liverpool, especially since Manchester United has lost four of their last five encounters with this opponent. Hence, Parker believes Amorim needs to adjust his lineup appropriately to counter Brighton’s dynamic, high-pressing style, and Dalot should be the one to give way.
In an interview with Metro, Parker stated: “Looking at Dalot, would Amorim continue to include him after his recent performance? If I were to pick the starting lineup, my answer would be no. I see Noussair Mazraoui sitting on the bench. I would choose Mazraoui because of his energy. He defends better and is also more effective going forward.”
The former defender further analyzed Dalot’s role in the previous match: “Dalot cannot carry the responsibility. He is weak both offensively and defensively. Therefore, it’s up to the coach to decide. I think Amorim already has his own plans.”
Manchester United is aiming for their third consecutive Premier League win, so Amorim must carefully consider this issue. They want to end their poor record against Brighton, especially when playing at their home ground, Old Trafford.
