After weeks of waiting, Matheus Cunha finally scored for Manchester United, playing a key role in their 4-2 victory over Brighton in the 9th round of the Premier League.
Joining Man Utd from Wolves for £62.5 million during the summer transfer window, Cunha was expected to be an important piece in the “Red Devils” attack. However, it took him 9 matches to net his first goal for his new club. In the match against Brighton, the 1999-born player delivered a brilliant performance with a beautiful curling shot to open the scoring, before Casemiro and newcomer Bryan Mbeumo added goals, securing Old Trafford’s third consecutive Premier League win.
Speaking after the match, Cunha told BBC Match of the Day: “It’s hard to put into words how I feel right now. I have worked very hard for this moment. This is my first goal at Old Trafford, something I have dreamed about many times. But above all, the most important thing is the team’s victory.”
Cunha also admitted he felt anxious and pressured during his goal drought in the early rounds. He recalled with a smile: “I joked with Bryan [Mbeumo] and [Benjamin] Sesko that I needed this feeling of scoring. I was very impatient, and once I scored, they just said ‘Now you can enjoy it!’”
After the game, the Brazilian striker also revealed he received some straightforward teasing from teammates in the locker room: “I hadn’t scored for a long time, so when I finally did, the guys laughed and said: ‘Oh, so you actually know how to score!’.”
Although teased, it was clear the whole team was happy for Cunha after he broke his early-season spell. Previously, the former Wolves player had suffered bad luck with an injury in the match against Burnley, which stalled his form. However, his relentless effort and fighting spirit helped him gradually regain his performance.
Coach Ruben Amorim also praised his player after the Brighton win: “He was worried because he hadn’t scored yet, though he tried to appear calm. But today, I understand why he was so happy. Cunha defended very well, moved smartly, and when he had the ball, I felt completely confident.”
The 4-2 victory over Brighton not only lifted Man United to 4th place in the standings but also injected fresh energy into Coach Amorim’s in-form squad. With the excitement from his first goal, Cunha is expected to continue scoring in upcoming matches against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, proving he is fully worth the huge transfer fee the club paid.
Sir Jim refuses to bring striker with over 600 goals to MU despite Amorim’s wishes Although Coach Ruben Amorim is eager to sign Robert Lewandowski to strengthen the attack, Sir Jim Ratcliffe immediately rejected the idea, affirming that Manchester United will not repeat mistakes with “aging” signings.
