The opening El Clasico of the 2024/25 campaign concluded with Real Madrid winning 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Yet, the post-match atmosphere was dominated by intense arguments among players on both sides, notably involving Dani Carvajal and Lamine Yamal.
Right after the final whistle, players from both teams engaged in a fierce argument. Among them, Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal was seen confronting Lamine Yamal, his teammate from the Spanish national team. According to reporters at Bernabeu, Carvajal provoked Yamal by implying: "You talk too much. Now keep talking."
Yamal immediately tried to respond but was held back by Barcelona teammates to prevent the situation from escalating. Later, several other Real Madrid players reportedly targeted the 18-year-old Barca star as the atmosphere on the pitch became chaotic.
After the match, Frenkie de Jong expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of the Real Madrid players. The Dutch star stated: "I didn’t see exactly what happened because I was sitting on the bench. After the referee blew the whistle, I saw Real Madrid players rushing towards Lamine. That reaction was a bit excessive. If Carvajal wants to talk to Lamine, he could call or message him since they are teammates on the Spanish national team. Why make such a fuss on the pitch?”
De Jong also admitted that Barca did not perform well enough: "In the first half, our ball control wasn’t sharp enough. Real Madrid capitalized better with their attacking players. In the second half, we lacked breakthroughs and didn’t create many clear chances.”
The conflict between the two Spanish players was not accidental. Before the El Clasico, Lamine Yamal attracted attention with a statement on Twitch saying: "Real Madrid cheats and complains a lot." This remark angered Madrid fans and reportedly stirred unrest in the Real locker room.
The Marca revealed that Carvajal held a grudge over that comment and intended to “have a clear talk” with Yamal after the match. When asked about the young Barca player’s comment, coach Xabi Alonso declined to comment: "I don’t want to discuss that matter. There are too many statements coming from Barcelona. For us, what happens on the pitch is the most important.”
In terms of football, Real Madrid secured a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham. Fermin Lopez scored a consolation goal for Barca assisted by Marcus Rashford. Mbappe also missed a penalty, but Real dominated with 21 shots compared to 13 from their opponents.
