Lamine Yamal kept playing even though his groin injury hadn't completely healed, yet his weak display combined with the clash after the El Clasico is causing huge stress for the Barcelona youngster.
Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal appeared in the 1-2 loss to Real Madrid last Sunday, despite still struggling with a persistent groin injury. According to The Athletic, club insiders confirmed this is not a minor injury, and Yamal will have to learn to cope with recurring pain – a factor that may have affected his performance. During the match, the young Spanish player touched the ball 79 times but did not register a single shot on target and lost possession 22 times.
Before and after the game, Yamal also became the center of an off-field controversy. Earlier in the week, he appeared on a Kings League livestream where he joked that Real Madrid players are “complainers and simulation experts,” while recalling the previous 4-0 victory at Bernabeu. Although meant playfully, the comment quickly spread widely and stirred unrest in the Real Madrid dressing room.
After the final whistle, a minor confrontation occurred when Yamal approached to shake hands with captain Dani Carvajal. The Real defender refused and made a gesture towards the young Barca player. The situation escalated until Thibaut Courtois intervened and Eduardo Camavinga stepped in to calm things down. Before Yamal left the pitch, Vinícius Jr also came forward to confront him, but Raphinha quickly stepped in to prevent further escalation.
After the match, teammates defended Yamal. Frenkie de Jong criticized Carvajal for “showing attitude on the field instead of talking privately,” calling the Real player's reaction “excessive.” The Dutch midfielder emphasized that Yamal is still learning how to handle pressure from the crowd.
This incident once again highlights the huge pressure Yamal faces both on and off the pitch as Barcelona’s brightest young talent. After signing a new contract in August, making him the highest-paid player at the club, Yamal endures constant scrutiny from fans and media, while still only 18 years old and developing both physically and mentally.
