Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy grabbed headlines by saying he would be willing to “lose an arm” to secure the signing of striker Harry Kane for Old Trafford.
Benni McCarthy, ex-assistant coach of Manchester United’s first team, recently attracted attention by stating he would “be prepared to lose an arm” if it meant bringing Harry Kane to Old Trafford.
For years, Manchester United repeatedly pursued Kane while he was still at Tottenham, but all attempts failed. It was not until 2023 that the English striker decided to leave England and join Bayern Munich, aiming to win trophies he never achieved in the Premier League.
According to BILD, Kane’s contract with Bayern includes a release clause worth £57 million, which can be activated in the summer of 2026 if he notifies the club of his intention to leave before February. However, the German club wants to retain the 32-year-old star and is considering extending his contract. Nevertheless, this clause still offers hope to clubs like Manchester United if they can convince Kane to return to England.
Speaking to BestBettingSite, McCarthy said: “If given the choice, I’d be willing to lose an arm to bring Harry Kane to Manchester United. He’s a genuine goal-scoring machine, the kind of striker every team needs.”
However, the former South African star admitted that the current Red Devils manager, Ruben Amorim, might not see Kane as fitting his tactical philosophy. “Kane often roams freely and likes to drop deep to build play, whereas Amorim demands his striker to stay more inside the penalty area. I don’t think he’ll change his style just for one player, even if that player is Kane,” McCarthy added.
McCarthy further noted that signing Kane now might not be the best decision: “He’s over 30 now. If United spend more than £50 million, they might only get two peak seasons out of him. Perhaps it’s time to explore other options.”
As for Kane himself, he has stated that he is happy at Bayern Munich and has no plans to return to England. The English striker remains focused on winning more major trophies with the “Bavarians,” including the Bundesliga and Champions League, rather than chasing Premier League goal records.
